Choose a way to seek care

You can start with a visit in a room or a conversation over a screen. Use the same questions about the person and the proposed care.

An in-person starting point

An in-person clinic gives you a place to talk through the problem. Before arranging a visit, ask how the assessment works.

  • Who will see me?
  • Can we discuss other options as well as the product I saw advertised?
  • How are tests, records and later questions handled?
  • What is charged for the assessment itself?

An online starting point

A video visit, a phone call or an exchange online can be a way to receive care called telehealth. Ask what the visit will involve and how to reach the person caring for you afterward.

  • Medical-board guidance holds online care to the assessment and treatment requirements that apply when you visit in person (September 17, 2026).
  • For an online visit, the doctor needs a licence or legal permission to treat patients in the state where you are. That state’s rules decide what permission is needed and when an exception applies (September 26, 2026).
  • Ask how the service confirms where you will be during the visit.
  • If the doctor relies on an exception, ask for the state rule and check it with that state’s medical board.

Keep the search grounded

Keep a note of who you would see: their complete name and their job title. Use that name for the next check.

  • Compare the visit process, not just the headline.
  • Ask who arranges an in-person assessment if one is needed.
  • Keep unanswered questions on your list.
