Bring the question you still have

You do not need to know all the terms before a visit. Start with what you want explained, and keep asking until the answer is clear.

If you are still choosing care

Ask how the visit will work before agreeing to the process.

  • Who would assess me?
  • Where is their licence record?
  • What happens if I need an examination in person?
  • How can I ask a question after the visit?

If a medicine has been proposed

Put the full name at the top of your notes. Ask the person prescribing to connect the choice to the problem you described.

  • Why this product for my concern?
  • What other approaches could we discuss?
  • Who makes or supplies it?
  • What written information explains possible problems?
  • Who can explain instructions I find unclear?

If the bill is still unclear

Ask for the total under the terms that would apply to you.

  • What is included?
  • What is extra?
  • What renews automatically?
  • What happens after the opening offer?
  • What would I pay if the plan declines coverage?

If you need another conversation

The Federation of State Medical Boards’ guidance says patients must have a way to ask the professional treating them more questions (checked September 26, 2026).

  • Name the point you did not understand.
  • Ask for the answer in ordinary words.
  • Write down what remains unresolved.
  • Use the worksheet to keep the next conversation focused.
