Make the plan’s answer specific
Ask for a plain explanation of any plan term you do not know.
- A formulary is the plan’s list of medicines eligible for coverage.
- With prior authorization, payment requires agreement from the plan beforehand.
- A copay is the part of a cost that you pay under a coverage arrangement.
- Is this product on my plan’s list for this use?
- Is prior authorization needed?
- What would I pay at the pharmacy?
- What is charged for the visit and any tests?
- What happens if the request is refused?
Medicare depends on the use
The law still excludes medicines used for weight loss from Medicare Part D, its drug benefit (September 26, 2026).
- A medicine can be eligible for Part D payment for another accepted use, such as diabetes, but the plan’s rules still determine coverage (September 26, 2026).
- Ask why the medicine is prescribed and whether your plan can pay for that use.
A separate temporary program for weight medicines
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a separate program for certain weight-loss medicines. It operates outside ordinary Part D insurance payments. Eligible Part D members pay $50 for a monthly supply (September 26, 2026).
- The temporary program opens July 1, 2026 and closes December 31, 2027 (schedule checked September 26, 2026).
- Paying the $50 does not bring you closer to the annual cap on your own spending for Part D medicines. The Bridge also gives no extra help to lower that payment for people with low incomes (September 26, 2026).
- The Bridge is for adults aged 18 or older who meet its weight, health and plan rules. People with type 2 diabetes use ordinary Part D instead. A Part D plan’s earlier payment during 2026 for a GLP-1 medicine makes that person ineligible for the Bridge for 2026 (September 26, 2026).
- Your prescriber must request approval through the Bridge’s separate process before the medicine is paid for (September 26, 2026).
- Ask your prescriber to check your weight and health against the full rules in the Medicare source below.
- Ask your plan whether your kind of Part D plan qualifies and whether a past medicine payment rules you out.
Keep a record of the answer
Write down what the plan agreed to pay and any steps still needed.
- Ask for written terms.
- Keep the decision with the proposed product name.
- Ask who will handle a request for more information.
